Termites: Frequently Asked Questions
We hope these frequently asked questions help you understand why termite inspections are necessary and what to expect after an inspection.
Why would I need a termite inspection?
Because structural damage can be costly to repair, most homes should be inspected yearly for new termite activity. Termites can swarm multiple times per year; finding and eliminating an infestation early can prevent expensive structural repairs later.
How long does a termite inspection take? What’s involved?
Our highly trained inspectors typically complete an inspection in about an hour. Your home or structure is examined inside and out for signs of termites and other wood-destroying organisms using proven methods and checklists.
What does an inspector look for during a termite inspection?
Richland Termite inspectors look for active infestation and any resulting damage. Indicators include:
- Termites, mud tubes, hollowed or blistered wood, swarmer wings
- Fungus or water damage, earth-to-wood contact
- Plumbing leaks and other conducive conditions
Is my newly constructed home vulnerable to termite infestation?
Yes. Any structure that contains wood is a potential target. Pre-treating a new build is strongly recommended to protect your investment.
How do subterranean termites get into a home?
They need only a 1/64″ gap in concrete, wood, or masonry. Termites enter from soil, often via mud tubes, and travel daily between the structure and their colony.
What if no evidence of termites is found?
Richland Termite & Pest Control will issue a written report stating no visible evidence was found in the inspected areas. Re-inspections are still advised periodically, especially if nearby properties have activity.
If termites are present, what happens next?
You’ll receive a report (typically within 24 hours) outlining findings and a recommended treatment plan to stop further damage, along with repair options and pricing.
Will my family need to vacate during treatment?
Not always. Many subterranean treatments are completed without vacating. After inspection, we’ll explain the exact procedures for your situation.
What if the inspection reveals extensive termite damage?
If structural soundness or appearance is affected, we’ll specify the repairs needed. Our team is experienced in specialized termite damage repairs and will outline the process and timeline.
