Why act now? Rats eat and contaminate food, damage structures and property, and can carry parasites and disease.

Common Rodents

Rats are among the most troublesome and damaging rodents in the United States. They eat and contaminate food, damage structures, and transmit parasites and diseases to people and animals. They thrive in many climates and are found in and around homes and buildings, on farms, and in gardens and open fields. People don’t often see rats, but signs of their presence are easy to detect. In California, the most troublesome species are the roof rat and the Norway rat.

Norway Rats (Rattus norvegicus)

Also called brown or sewer rats, Norway rats are stocky burrowers and larger than roof rats. Burrows occur along building foundations, beneath rubbish or woodpiles, and in moist garden or field areas. Nests may be lined with shredded paper, cloth, or other fibrous material.

When they invade buildings, Norway rats usually remain on the basement or ground floor. They occur throughout the 48 contiguous United States—generally at lower elevations—but can be present wherever people live.

Roof Rats (Rattus rattus)

Roof rats are slightly smaller than Norway rats; their tails are longer than their heads and bodies combined. Agile climbers, they live and nest above ground in trees, shrubs, and dense vegetation (such as ivy). In buildings, they’re often in enclosed or elevated spaces—attics, walls, false ceilings, and cabinets.

They prefer ocean-influenced, warmer climates. Where roof rats occur, Norway rats may also be present. If unsure of the species, look for rats at night with a bright flashlight or trap a few for identification.

Rats vs. Mice (Quick ID)

Young rats are sometimes confused with mice. In general, very young rats have heads and feet that look large for their bodies, while adult mice have proportionately smaller heads and feet. Both gnaw wood, but rats leave much larger tooth marks.
